Jan 4 - A Year in the Life of MG

It seems every year on December 31st we ask ourselves the same thing; where did the year go? Have you ever actually traced your year back to January 1st and gone through exactly where that year took you?

That’s what I’m going to do right now! Trace back Mobina Galore’s 2013. I don’t remember what we did last weekend, how could I possibly remember what happened in February? Well with my excessive use of Excel spreadsheets it should be a piece of cake. What I can remember off hand is that there were A LOT of fun times.

2013 kicked off with us participating in the finals for Manitoba Songfest with our track “Hear Me Out” off our Skeletons EP. Not a bad way to start out in a new city. That also marked our first time playing the Park Theatre.

Shortly after, we recorded two demos with Tony at Empire Recording; “Skeletons” and “Trying to Survive” which we posted on our site for free download. We shopped those 2 songs around in hopes of finding the perfect producer for a full length and the perfect producer we did find. But up first, Canadian Summer Tour!

Tour scheduling was well underway early in the year, which would incorporate our NXNE showcase in Toronto where we reconnected with many friends from across Canada. We kicked off our tour here in Winnipeg with another first, playing The Albert, with our good friends from Edmonton, Owls By Nature, and local rockers, Modern Man. We were pumped to play there, if only once. Ontario was the first leg of the tour and was our first time playing most of those cities. The feedback from Ontario was a confidence booster and had us stoked to return. We teamed up with our good friends Willhorse (who recently placed 5th in Vancouver’s Peak Performance Project) for a few of those gigs and let me tell you, all of those nights were highlights.

The tour continued and brought us to Western Canada. We love touring out west because that’s where we formed and our fan base is strong. It’s always a good mix of work and play out there, especially in the summer when beautiful mountains and lakes surround you. We really try to experience and take in the moments we have, because we are so fortunate our lives allow us to travel across this beautiful country seeing new people and places every day. Extra days off in Vancouver are always necessary and of course a few days to lay low in Fernie, where I used to live and where I met Mobina Galore’s drummer.

We finished the Summer 2013 Tour with a nice long drive from Edmonton to Winnipeg to play The Cavern, which has continued to be our favorite venue in the city. We shared the bill with our friends from Winnipeg, Distances, who we had hooked up with a few days earlier in Lethbridge. The good times continued here in Winnipeg as we were both equally as happy to have our respective tours come to an end and to celebrate being back home with a packed gig.

Immediately after a short stint overseas we hustled to get as much rehearsal in before we headed into the studio to work with the incredible John Paul Peters as our engineer, producer and mixer. After hearing Propaghandi’s Failed States album, I NEEDED to work with whoever did that album and he just so happened to live in Winnipeg. The process began in August and is still in the works. We are all so excited and proud of what we have made, we cannot wait to share it with the world! We have not set a release date, but are leaning towards the fall.

Since September we have tamed it down a bit and settled back into our Winnipeg day-to-day’s trying for about one local gig a month, but then of course great opportunities come up and we just can’t say no. Like when we were asked to open for LA’s Bleached at Union Sound Hall early September and later that month had a gig at The Cavern with our pals from Fernie, Shred Kelly.  That was a great month!

We closed the year off with a gig at The Rose n Bee with Moon Tan and Boys’ Club, which despite the freezing cold weather and it being smack dab in the middle of the holidays was super busy and fun.

Okay, so NOW we will take some time to chill! And by chill I mean continue to work on the new album, get working on some new songs and start planning for the upcoming months.

For being a DIY band (not by choice, but by necessity) I am extremely proud of what we have accomplished! But you know what I’ve learned most about this past year? That all those good times have left me broke as hell, so bring on a new year!
